Become A SponsorOur History The Korean War ended in 1953 and the streets were flooded with orphaned children; shivering from the cold and starving from hunger. In 1959, A 75-year-old retired pastor, Sung Yul Yoon, was moved with compassion for these children, and on his own property founded Angels’ Haven Orphanage. An American missionary, Joseph Theis, joined Pastor Yoon’s efforts and they labored together to bring help and hope to the orphaned children. A young social worker, Kyu Hwan Cho, soon added his assistance to the team and Angels’ Haven quickly became a true haven to many orphaned children. Now, 40 years later, Mr. Cho continues to be the Director of the orphanage and father to hundreds of children. Because of their selfless dedication these children have grown to become successful business people, teachers, musicians, doctors and scientists who are scattered around the world. Angels’ Haven has grown over the years to meet the changing needs of the community and its children. Angels’ Haven continues to be home to orphaned children, children from broken families, children who cannot be cared for due to an illness or disability, abandoned children and young vagrants. Still on its original property, Angels’ Haven has a school for the handicapped, a Braille library, a rehabilitation center and a hospital. Through the tireless efforts of the staff and volunteers of Angels’ Haven, the least fortunate among society continue to find hope and realize their dreams. In 1986 Angels’ Haven Outreach was founded to provide support to the orphanage. Sponsorship and adoption programs were developed. Our Sponsorship Program Sponsorship on an individual or organizational basis is encouraged as sponsors play an invaluable role in the lives of the children. Typically, sponsors donate $20 to $25 dollars each month. Sponsorship contributions help provide education, housing, food and medical care. In addition to the obvious financial assistance, when a child receives pictures and letters from a sponsor they know there is someone special in their life that cares for them. Of course, one-time donations are also gratefully received! Angels’ Haven Outreach is a ministry and 100% of the sponsorship donations go directly to the care of the orphanage and all contributions are tax deductible. Self Support and Fund Raising We have several workshops in which the disabled young people of Angels’ Haven strive to make handcrafted goods by using the skills taught to them by our talented staff. They students are trained in a vocational skill, which serves to increase their self-confidence as well as their independence. All the proceeds from the sale of the items go directly to the care of the orphanage. Children who have an interest and talent are encouraged to create designs for the Christmas cards. Each year a new set of 12 designs are selected. The cards are painted and then hand assembled and packed, and ready for shipping by early fall. In addition to the making of Christmas cards, the children also handcraft beautiful traditional Korean ceramics, hand carved wooden pencil holders and plaques, and the girls sew aprons and place mats. Fine Arts Angels’ Haven was host to a world wide poetry event, in which handicapped young people through out the world took part. 270 Korean and foreign guests packed the church to witness this deeply moving experience. In addition to learning to appreciate poetry, several children participate in the choir and have traveled in country and abroad sharing their testimony through song.
